In October of 2003, just two weeks after his second birthday, Owen was hospitalized for a severe bone infection in his leg. After two weeks of being non-responsive to antibiotics, a chest x-ray found a large mass which was diagnosed as a Stage IV Neuroblastoma - a very rare and difficult to treat form of childhood cancer. After several remissions, on the 26th of August 2009, at 2:35 in the morning, Owen Scott Lea left us for a better place.
The Owen Lea Foundation was founded by Owen's family and friends. The sole purpose of the foundation is to assist other families battling the nightmare of neuroblastoma with late mortgage or utility payments; they provide gift certificates for groceries and gas stations;they assist with lodging and other transportation expenses; and, unfortunately, more often than not, with financial assistance for funeral and burial costs.
The Owen Lea Foundation exists solely to provide support to families living with Neuroblastoma. The foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in Virginia by the parents, friend and family of Owen Scott lea. 100% of the funds donated go to the families.
